Context (Production / use)
Huon Wardle: 'The artist is 'Woody' Joseph, age 70. Joseph's is one of Jamaica's oldest surviving intuitive artists. He lives in Castleton, a few miles above Kingston. His works are motivated by an animist philosophy. He makes them from odd pieces of tree root or base; each piece is suited to the particular shape of the wood block. Many of his sculptures are painted red, a colour which has considerable personal significance for him (featuring in a number of dreams of flight). This piece was dyed black instead. He has exhibited widely at the National Gallery, local galleries and abroad. Supplements income with hillside peasant farming'.
