Description (CMS Description)
An example of the embroidery so typical of the Kathiwar and Kutch, which is also found in some parts of Pakistan and Sind. This is an example of the Chokla or embroidered handkerchief, two of which are presented to a girl on her wedding day and later hung in the bedroom as decorations. These are embroidered on coarse, homespun and hand-woven cotton. The basic fabric is always brightly coloured, generally as is this one in blue, but the ground fabric is almost completely covered by elongated stitches in floss silk so that the ground can hardly be seen. This example also includes small pieces of mirror work which are very common in this area.
