Description

Model of catamaran with multiple related accompaniments. [A] Model catamaran made of joined wooden batons with a wooden mast and cloth sail. [B] Detached but present wooden steering oar, broadly rectangular blade. [C] Attached by fibre is a broadly oval shaped notched stone anchor. [D] Affixed to the boat upon a wooden shelved stand is a woven basket, two cylindrical wooden objects, a length of twisted fibre, a possible rudder and a metal hook upon a fibre line. Also detached but present includes two small wooden rectangular paddles [E] and [F], the latter blade is notched, [G] a wooden shafted metal hook and [H] two wooden cylinders connected by fibre. Damaged.

This model was stored previously with the Taiwan collections. It is unclear why this was so, since the accession register states the model to be from Pernambucco, Brazil. It was re-catalogued as part of the Brazil collection in July 1994 (Alison McKeating).

There is something about this model catamaran which really sparked my curiosity. Ensuring its safety on its voyage to new storage proved to be one of my greatest packing achievements yet.'
