Extract from donor' s letter: " I have a small collection of Chinese dolls. . made for my sister in China (unfortunately I don' t know what part) by a village carpenter to illustrate the costumes, etc of a whole family - Grandfather, Grandmother, son, daughter, bride, bridegroom, children, servants, etc. . Description (CMS Description)
Two dolls, representing mourners. Clothing made of silk, etc - evidently the correct materials. A: male doll. Long gown of coarse, undyed cotton. Over this, a loose, full length coat of very coarse canvas, with belt of plaited straw. White shirt and drawers, and grey hose. High, helmet shaped hat of canvas, bound with straw and lined with cotton. In right hand, a ?whisk made of fringed cotton (unknown representation). B: female doll. Three quarter length coat and skirt of undyed cotton. Covered by coat of very coarse canvas. Blue trousers. Hooded headdress of cotton, covered with canvas
