Description (CMS Description)
Necked bowl lute. Body and neck carved from single block of wood. One sound hole under bridge and two crescentic sound holes on either side of table. Four frets (" xiang") on body and nine frets (" pin") on neck. At the time of collection (1972), it was stated to be 100-50 years old.

Reverse of the body has Chinese characters inlaid with mother of pearl. Neck adorned with bone, tortoise shell and mother of pearl plaques. Pegs capped with bone. Strung with four silk strings.

A hand written note dated 23/10/1979 and signed only by Bob notes that 1977.283 & 1977.284 were borrowed, presumably for research/play in March 1978, and must have been returned by May 1978 when 1977.284 was borrowed again, May 1978- November 1979.

Exhibited in MAA's Spotlight Gallery, More than Music: Collecting Kun Opera, 16 October 2018- 13 May 2019.
This was a collaboration with the Cambridge Rivers Project to celebrate the launch of the Digital Museum of Kun Opera. It highlights Kun or Kunqu, one of the oldest forms of traditional Chinese Opera, through musical instruments associated with it and through creative responses by artists from the UK and China.
