Description

Hat or helmet decorated with painted scrolls and bats. Conical form of cane strips, plaited on the inside and arranged vertically on the outside; rim is reinforced with a length of cane; crown is wrapped with cane strips and painted in five segments of natural green, red, white and blue; double scroll motif and two bats painted on sides; ties of woven cotton in blue and white, secured through sides of helmet with three Chinese square-holed coins.

Description (Physical description)
Small brown conical hat, made of ?bamboo pieces, and painted. There are animal figures painted on the hat, including bats. The point is multi-coloured, red, green, yellow and blue, and the brim is red. There are textile chin straps.

Description (Physical description)
Hat, brown in colour and conical in shape. Made of bamboo and cane strips, and a bamboo rim. Painted decoration on the exterior including multicoloured panels on the centre of the cone, animal figures painted around the side of the hat, including bats and two bound scrolls. On the inside of the hat are green and white textile chin straps, knotted on the underside.

Context (Amendments / updates)
There are three hats of very similar form in the British Museum collection: As1842,0126.8, As1846,0520.2 and As1846,0520.3. One of these is described as a soldier's hat. Helmet has been added to the description to increase searchability.
