Description

Wooden walking stick, wrapped in plaited basketry in contrasting light and dark brown/black linear bands forming diagonal patterns. No head or handle, possibly unfinished, with the basketry strips projecting above the top of the wood. Bound at top and base with twisted plant fibre cord or string.

Description (Physical description)
Card for 1937.1320 A-C notes 'Three walking sticks, covered with basketwork. Shafts completely covered by cane work. Longitudinal strands are pale, while the encircling ones are dark brown.
A: has no head piece. Some of the cane pattern is tan coloured.
B: has short, plain, wooden handle bent at right angles.
C: has a knob carved to resemble roughly a human face'

Donated by Walter William Skeat and noted only as West Indies, but probably collected by his younger brother, Arthur Percival Skeat, J.P., Crown Surveyor, and planter from Londonderry, Dominica. He laid out the boundaries of the Carib reserve in Dominica in 1902.
