Description
Carved wood head, possibly used as helmet mask in Yoruba Gelede masquerades. Face confined to a small lower section. Features set close together and decorated with black and blue pigment, the blue is possibly Reckitt's blue. Spherical projection at the top of the head.

Context (Acquisition Details)
Henry Scipio Reitlinger was a collector who died in 1950. Upon his death The Henry Reitlinger Trust was established to run the Reitlinger Bequest Museum in Maidnehead which operated from 1951-1987. After this museum closed the objects were transferred in 1991 to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. In 1993 21 objects were transferred to the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Cambridge.

Carved wood head probably used as helmet mask. Face confined to a small lower section and features set close together. Hollow pupils and nostrils. Black diagonal mark on cheeks. Small asymmetrical ears. Raised, black band above face follows circumference of top of head. Large section missing at back of head.
