Description (Physical description)
Buddha made from light coloured, low quality marble, sitting in the earth touching position, cross-legged on a stylised lotus pedestal base. The Buddha has a conical top knot, which is chipped at the tip, and elongated ear lobes. He wears a cloak over his left shoulder. Detail is engraved and there are remnants of applied red paint and gold leaf, especially on the back. The base is rough suggesting the Buddha was originally attached to a larger structure; Good.

Context (Amendments / updates)
This Buddha's facial characteristics are strikingly different stylistically from the others in this group, though the iconography is the same-lotus bud top, earth-touching and meditation hand positions, feet in padmasama (lotus position) and seated on lotus cushion. Note elevated eyebrows, and slits of eyes, face/head shape. Suggest this is Burmese but from area of Burma near Yumam. Difficult to date. Possibly late C18th. J. Stargardt, 18/4/97.
