Context (Production / use)
Catalogue card for 1992.100: 'Oxossi is the God of the Jungle, hunting, vegetation, fecundity and also of the Indians. He is the highest of caboclos and is synchrotized with St Sebastian (who was killed by the arrows of pagan persecutors). Arrows, and a bow and arrows are symbols of Oxossi. ('Caboclo' - term loosely used to indicate any inhabitant of the Brazilian interior who has a trace of Indian blood. It can also apply to a pure blooded Brazilian Indian or a half breed (white and Indian). Sometimes it is used with mixtures of Indian and Negro, if the individual in question has Indian features and straight black hair. By extension, the term is used to apply to any backwoods man of north, northeast, or central Brazil)'
