Description (CMS Description)
Necklace (waseisei) formed of 32 tusks carved from whale teeth, pierced and the top and strung on a cord of 3-ply plaited coir, each strand of it formed of 2 strands of 3-ply plaited coir. One of the ends of the cord has snapped. An additional cord of 3-ply plaited coir is woven around the cord and between the top of the teeth. The teeth are curving upwards and tapering. They are a light honey colour at the front with a darker shade at the back. A small circular cream label with a metallic rim is attached to the cord and reads [handwritten in black ink:] ’31.204.’ '1931.204' inscribed in black ink on the side of the first tusk from the left.
