Description (CMS Description)
Necklace (waseisei) formed of 25 tusks carved from whale teeth, pierced and the top and strung on a cord formed of 11 strands of very fine 3-ply plaited coir. To the left, the cord is severely damaged and fragments of the cord have fallen off (kept in a separate bag with the object, found hanging from the object when removed from permanent display in October 2011). To the right, the end of the cord is bound with 3-ply plaited coir. Some of the strands are damaged. An additional length of fine 3-ply plaited coir is woven around the cord and between the top of the tusks. The tusks are curving outwards and tapering. The tusks are of a light cream colour at the front and back.
