Description (CMS Description)
Circular yaqona bowl carved from a solid piece of medium-brown vesi wood. The bowl has a broad undecorated lip which has been chipped in a few places and has a deep notched carved on one side. The bowl is supported by four conical legs. One of the legs has been sanded down or chopped at the bottom, leaving it sloped and not level with the others. A large wooden lug is carved underneath the lip, between two of the legs. It is pierced with two holes through which is tied two lengths of 3-ply plaited coir cord. The cord is now broken at the front end of the lug. The rest of the cord is kept the object and consists of four strands of 3-ply plaited coir twisted together. The cord is wrapped with string to which numerous small cowry shells have been tied. Green and red wool has been tied to the end of the cord and a larger cowry shell attached to it with string. Several white stains are visible on the surface and lip of the bowl. Insect damage, especially near the centre of the bowl has left several holes and grooves. One large chip or groove runs across the full width of the lip. White residue and a few stains visible on the bottom of the bowl.

Context (CMS Context)
Labels & inscriptions: Between two of the legs, a large horizontal collection of white residue suggests that there might have been writing or a label attached there once. The severed cord has a small label attached to it on which 'Fiji' is written in black ink on one side and '66.7' on the other.
