Labels & inscriptions: A large cream label attached to the mat reads [handwritten in pencil:] 18 E KUTA (2). MACUATA Province. JULY 1955' and [added in black ink:] '62.278 b'. On the other side, the label reads [handwritten in pencil:] 'Original length 6 ft 0 ins. Part cut off - damaged by oil.'

Description (CMS Description)
Rectangular mat of soft sedge (Kuta), Elaeocharis plantaginea, Cyperaceae. Strips about 0.4 cm wide. Some sedge fibres have been dyed black and create a longitudinal pattern repeated three times: 4 interrupted lines. The long edges are decorated with a fringe of sedge fibre. One of the short edges has been cut and is very damaged along the cut line.
