Wainiika, Sanggani, Thakaundrove, Vanua Levu, Purchased. Donated G.K. Roth 1962'. [stamped in black ink:] 'CUMAA -6 JUN 1988 TRANSCRIBED'. [added in blue pen:] 'rolled'. A small round red sticker pasted to the front of the card. On the back of the card [in blue pen:] 'A= 87" x 49 1/2", 225 cm x 126 cm; B= 95" x 51" 242 cm x 131 cm; C= 80" x 45"; 201 cm x 114 cm; D= 75" x 48", 191 cm x 122 cm'.

Description (CMS Description)
Rectangular kula mat woven from thin strips of pandanus leaf (0.7cm). The centre of the mat is decorated with a number of black square inside a black border woven with the va'kadi vilivili ('like a swarm of black ants' - name recorded by Rod Ewins in this study of Gauan mat-making, 1982, name might differ in Vanua Levu). Black patterns not visible on the underside. Woollen border in blue wool with red fringes. Longer ties of blue wool in the corners. Good condition.

Labels & inscriptions: A modern rectangular cream label attached to the edge of the mat reads on one side '3/4 Mat red border WAINIIKA SANGGANI CAK. Oct.56' and [added in black ink:] '62.216 C'. On the other side [in pencil and crossed out:] 'IBE KUTA (1) MACUATA province JULY 55'.
