Description (Physical description)
Hafted adze. 'V'-shape shaft of dark wood, circular in section and irregular in width, with visible knots. Irregular butt. The 'bend' at the top is pointed. The shortest part of the shaft has been hollowed out and made convex to receive a layer of coir and the adze head of dark black stone. The adze head and the shaft are bound with a tight lashing of 3-ply plaited coir into which two slivers of wood have been inserted. The adze head is almost oval in section, convex at the top and flat underneath. Rounded sides. The cutting edge formed of the surface slanting at the top and bevelled underneath.
