Pärekori. A basket made by Aimo Meriläinen. It has a flat rectangular base and an oval rim, and is woven from broad, flat strips of pine. It has a looped handle over the top made from twisted pine.

Baskets such as this remain a ubiquitous item: several such baskets, in different sizes, are seen in most Finnish homes, holding logs, laundry, fruit, etc. Mr. Aimo Merilainen (basket maker) learned his skill from other soldiers during the war. He finds his own pine - the ideal wood is that from a tree split by lightning. Commercial copies made from machine-planed veneer are widely available.
