Context (Related Documents)
Teacup, Leh shop, 1987, wood and silver plated base metal. A traditional form but lacking the quality of older pieces which were made from selected knots and covered in silver sheet. This type of product, (together with plain wooden cups) is readily available in shops fronting the main street in Leh (Leh bazaar). The design around the footrim is a die stamped rendering of lotus petals. The double 'vajra' or 'visvavajra' motif on the base is an ancient Tibetan symbol for Buddhahood though shown here in a simplified and coarsened form
