Context (Acquisition Details)
The two cards cataloguing this item have a letter in a small envelope attached. The envelope is stamped with the date, '26 March 1914; and reads, 'Description of smock frock. E Sydney Hartland.' An attached letter reads, 'Particulars of smock. It was the property of Charles Steward, a shepherd of Newent aged now 69 or thereabouts. Thirty odd years ago he had two smocks made by a friend Mrs. Taylor also of Newent who is now dead & he wore those two smocks for 30 years shepherding. A little time back he gave up shepherding & gave one smock & a very choice old waistcoat to a young shepherd; the 2nd smock is the one you have. A Barwell.' At the bottom of the letter a further note has been appended: 'Miss Barwell, the writer of the foregoing memorandum, who was kind enough to negotiate the purchase of the smock for me, is the Headmistress of the Gloucester High School for Girls. She bought it through one of her scholars, a daughter of Charles Steward' s employer. E. Sidney Hartland 22 Jan: 1914'
