Context (Analysis)
'With the assistance of named Islanders, the work of Haddon and the Expedition members generated an enormous corpus of information and materials, including: indigenous drawings, hundreds of objects, over 1400 field photographs as well as sound recordings, film, zoological and plant specimens and kinship charts. [4] The extensive collections and data, published in the six volumes of the Expedition’s Reports (1901 - 1935) remains foundational for multi-disciplinary research in the region – in anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, ethnomusicology, environmental studies and astronomy. They continue to be a crucial resource for cultural descendants, are a source of inspiration for Islander artists, and have been extensively cited in local affirmations of island kastom and in native title claims, including Mabo (1992) and the Torres Strait Sea Claim Case (2013). Of particular importance to Islanders is Haddon’s practice of naming the key men with whom he worked with and the attribution of knowledge to particular Islanders.
