Context (Acquisition Details)
The 14th Annual Report (1899) noted that 'Mr Walter W. Skeat, M.A., District Magistrate of Larut, Selangor, Perak, has presented his extensive collection of Malay and Sakei weapons, implements, costumes, models, etc., comprising over a thousand specimens. This collection, the result of many years residence in the country, fills a considerable gap in the Museum series, and is the more valuable as many of the objects it embraces are actually no longer in use among the people, or are being rapidly displaced by European goods. By Grace, 10 February, 1898, Reporter, p. 486, the thanks of the University were offered to the donor for this most valuable gift.
The cost of packing and conveyance to Singapore was defrayed by the donor; while his father, Professor Skeat, generously paid the expenses of transit from Singapore to Cambridge; so that the collection was received by the University free of cost'.

Description (Physical description)
Wooden model of a double-sailed Salah-salah (.1) with deskhouse, square dandans (railings) at both ends and a bowsprit, secured with 2-ply plant fibre cord. Two masts supports inserted into the desk but only one mast (.2) present. This was rolled up and wrapped with 2-ply cords. Attached to the mast is the main sail, of rectangular white cotton cloth, with a top spar terminating in a crescent but no boom at the case. Two triangular sails (possibly jibs) are attached above the main sail. Four sweeps or oars (3-6) are detached but the larger two may have been secured to the hull with metal loops. The rudder (.7) is attached with metal loops. One part of the deck board (.8) can be detached. With two wooden anchors (.9-10)
A fragment similar to the railings at the stern, was found in position at the prow, and may extend over the prow. However, it is uncertain if it belongs to the model but has been suffixed to ensure it can be located (.11). If this should be atatched to the stern it may explain why the currents dimensions are short of the the 28 inches noted on the old label- this doesn th match the length of the current boat with bowsprit inserted.
Only those parts which are detachable or currently separate have been allocated suffixes.
