Context (Acquisition Details)
The 14th Annual Report (1899) noted that 'Mr Walter W. Skeat, M.A., District Magistrate of Larut, Selangor, Perak, has presented his extensive collection of Malay and Sakei weapons, implements, costumes, models, etc., comprising over a thousand specimens. This collection, the result of many years residence in the country, fills a considerable gap in the Museum series, and is the more valuable as many of the objects it embraces are actually no longer in use among the people, or are being rapidly displaced by European goods. By Grace, 10 February, 1898, Reporter, p. 486, the thanks of the University were offered to the donor for this most valuable gift.
The cost of packing and conveyance to Singapore was defrayed by the donor; while his father, Professor Skeat, generously paid the expenses of transit from Singapore to Cambridge; so that the collection was received by the University free of cost'.

"6. Gubang§ (Bugis or Celebes). -- The hull of this model shows a lot of dead-wood aft, and a lack of body abaft the midship section. A clipper cut-water, a long, straight bottom, narrow quarters, leading to a perpendicular stern-post, do not combine to make a handsome vessel, or to satisfy one as to the accuracy of the model .The rig is a European adaption, scarcely satisfactory except when beamwinds are available.

§ Klinkert says: -- "A small sea vessel exceedingly sea-worthy. In reality it is not doubt much more so than in the model."

8. Gubang ("pirate" boat). -- The gong is usually hung just forward of the deck-house. This model is chiefly interesting as showing what in old days was a very formidable type of sea rover, or pirate, propelled chiefly by oars and armed with swivel guns of considerable size in the bows. A stout timber breastwork forward gave shelter to the crew when as usual the attck was made end on."

The dimensions of the box in which the item is stored are given as 23.0" x 18.0" x 7.0" . Although this item appears to be Skeat I: 445, the measurements given on the catalogue card differ slightly from those given in the Printed Catalogue I, where the length is stated to be 16.0" . This item needs to be rechecked against the Printed Catalogue I, and the box reclassified according to the modern system; Collected by: Skeat.W.W in 1896; 1897
