Context (Acquisition Details)
The 14th Annual Report (1899) noted that 'Mr Walter W. Skeat, M.A., District Magistrate of Larut, Selangor, Perak, has presented his extensive collection of Malay and Sakei weapons, implements, costumes, models, etc., comprising over a thousand specimens. This collection, the result of many years residence in the country, fills a considerable gap in the Museum series, and is the more valuable as many of the objects it embraces are actually no longer in use among the people, or are being rapidly displaced by European goods. By Grace, 10 February, 1898, Reporter, p. 486, the thanks of the University were offered to the donor for this most valuable gift.
The cost of packing and conveyance to Singapore was defrayed by the donor; while his father, Professor Skeat, generously paid the expenses of transit from Singapore to Cambridge; so that the collection was received by the University free of cost'.

Context (Amendments / updates)
The box number belongs to an old system of classification, and is now probably irrelevant. The catalogue card also indicates the (old) box number ' 30 C' . It also suggests that this item is Skeat I: 462. However, Skeat' s Printed Catalogue refers to a model showing boat building, " showing how planks are warped" . The number ' 10' also appears on the catalogue card, its meaning as yet unascertained. The dimensions of the box are 20" x 7" x 13" . This item needs to be rechecked against the PrintedCatalogue, and the box reclassified according to the modern system; Collected by: Skeat.W.W in 1896; 1897

Context (Amendments / updates)
A boat was found in the Babington store in a box which has now been assigned the number 48.M.25. It was found with a Skeat number but without a Z number on the object or on the box label. The Skeat number SK 462A matches this FileMaker record most closely. Z 33779 is therefore, the most likely candidate for the object stored in 48.M.25.
