Context (Amendments / updates)
‘W.W. Skeat made two collections in Southeast Asia. The first was made while he was District Magistrate in Selangor, Malaysia in 1896-1897 and is known as the First Skeat Collection or Skeat I. The Second was made in 1899-1900 on the Cambridge Exploring Expedition to the Malay Provinces of Lower Siam and known as the Second Skeat Collection, or Skeat II. Most objects were not given accession numbers on acquisition by MAA, and given Z Numbers during reorganisation in the 1980s. Several objects presumed to be from the Skeat Collections, but which cannot be traced either to an existing Z number or to Skeat’s catalogues, have been given TEMP numbers. Some of these are definitely Skeat, and some are not. The work of matching objects to their Skeat catalogue numbers is ongoing and likely to remain incomplete.’

Context (Analysis)
This model women’s jacket is labelled Skeat I: 11, which is described in the catalogue of the first Skeat collection as a baju gâmis with small front opening. However, the jacket is labelled 'B [Baju] Kěbaya (pěrěmpuan)' and is consistent with a model full front opening kěbaya pěrěmpuan. Skeat I: 12-13 match this description and Skeat 1: 12 has been identified as Z 33793.3. It is possible this jacket is Skeat I: 13.

Context (Analysis)
Z 33793.1-4 relate to entries 10-13 in the first Skeat collection catalogue and, as described, there are two baju gâmis and two kěbaya pěrěmpuan. However, the numbering adhered to each garment is not always consistent with the numbering and descriptions given in the first catalogue, a situation not easily rectified, as some garments appear to have been assigned more than one number and others the same number. There are, however, the correct number and type of garments present in the sequence.
