Description
Rectangular headdress of plaited pandanus leaf with three vertical cylindrical projections Decorated with red ochre and black pigment overpainting and dyed purple bands. With strap. Open at the base with plain tags projecting upwards. Worn by women for ceremonial occasions. The number of sections at the top indicate their rank in the 'nmangki' (age grade ceremonies).

Collected by Anita Herle, Curator of Anthroplogy, MAA, a during fieldwork after a women's Nmangki ceremony at Biten on mainland Malekula on 8 August 2007. A small pig was sacrificed during the ceremony.
