Note by original collector, in letters attached to catalogue card: 'Collected 5/8/34, on undulating plateau land some 25 miles south of Rize (a port on Black Sea between Trebizond and ?Batoum). Several square miles of hillside , surrounding a small cliff-like outcrop of obsidian were covered with scattered blocks of the same material - like flint or parts of our breckland. Flakes, showing typical bulb of percussion were of common occurrence on outskirts of obsidian field. So an outlook for implements was kept to the chisel at once detected. . .Mr. Miles Burkitt considers it a very good example & from a new area for obsidian implements... If we had had the time I am sure that we could have found other implements. The plateau country was at an elevation of some 6,000 or so feet above sea-leve'
Found: Undulating plateau land, around 6,00 feet above sea-level; 25 miles South of Rizeh between Trebizond and ?Batoum; Collected by: Balfour.Gourlay.W in 5 8 1934
