Description

Stone altar to Hercules, put up by the First Cohort of Vangiones. Somewhat arched top with straight sides and flat bottom. Top of altar features a circular depression; front face decorated with sets of horizontal lines and grooves at top and bottom framing a carved inscription. One side of altar features a bull wearing two straps, possibly a harness; opposite side features a hanging arch of swag which frames a semicircle above. Reverse of altar is rough and undecorated. Inscription reads: 'Sacred to the Invincible God Hercules: Lucius Aemilius Savianus, tribune of the First Cohort of Vangiones, willingly and deservedly fulfilled his vow.'
