Context (Amendments / updates)
The date assigned by Catherine Johns in 'Sex or Symbol' is 3rd or 4th century AD, but Andrew Peachey gave it a date of late 2nd century to early 3rd century AD in 2012. As the most recent assessment, this latter has been added to the Period field.

Context (Other)
In June 2019, Oxford Archaeology East excavations at Monks Farm, Kelvedon, Essex found eight sherds from a single Colchester colour-coated barbotine vessel decorated with an extremely similar scene of a phallic quadriga ridden by a charioteer. While the phalluses' harness is very similar to that depicted in Z 30141, unlike this vessel the charioteer appears to be male and his body position mirrors more closely that of one of the riders in the British Museum's chariot race vessel (1857,0806.1). See 'Monk's Farm, Kelvedon: Archaeological Evaluation Report', OA Report no. 2354 by Oxford Archaeology East.
