A: Massive stone coffin and lid, of Barnack Rag. The lid is intact; the lower part of the coffin had been broken at the time of deposit to make it long enough to accommodate the inner coffin of lead

Description (Physical description)
A: Massive stone coffin and lid, of Barnack Rag. The lid is intact; the lower part of the coffin had been broken at the time of deposit to make it long enough to accommodate the inner coffin of lead Extern. length 6' 8" int. length 5' 11" extern. width at head 2' 8" int. width at head 2' extern. width at foot 2' 2.5" int. width at foot 1' 7" extern. depth at head 1' 2" int. depth at head 11" extern, depth at foot 11" int. depth at foot 8" .
B: Lead coffin found inside A, with plain lid with turned down edges. Length 6' 3.5" width at head 19.5" width at foot 18.5" depth at head 9.5" depth at foot 9" . Lead analysis will appear in report. The catalogue card reads 'This burial contained the skeleton of a man with a few fragments ^ of woven material (D), and ^ of much decayed glass between the lead and the stone coffins at the head. (C)'.

Context (Field collection)
Burial 1. Excavated in 19 August 1952: Found when laying sewerage pipes for new building estate, 19th August 1952, by Messrs Sindall (Contractors) Grid Ref. approx 52/452608. The coffin had been covered by a rectangular building with a wall and floor of chalk (Melbourn Rock).
