Description

Gutus, a side-spouted jug of bucchero ware. Funnel-shaped mouth with inverted rim and strainer with six small holes in the depressed centre. A strap handle emerges beneath the rim to the body of the vessel; a spout emerges from the vessel at a right-angle to the handle. Small, narrow neck, conical body and circular base. Spout partially missing, chip at bottom.

Context (Acquisition Details)
Transferred from the Fitzwilliam Museum to the Museum of Classical Archaeology, possibly in 1938, then transferred from the Museum of Classical Archaeology to MAA in November 1951. Other material from Tomassos was deposited with MAA directly by the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1951 and 1953.

Context (Analysis)
Buchholz, Hans-Günter et al. (2010) described this object as a baby feeding bottle. However, it seems more likely to have been a Gutus, a spouted vessel used to pour olive oil into an oil lamp. The strainer built into the gutus helps strain out the impurities in the olive oil.
