Description

Anthropomorphic plank-shaped figurine of Red Polished Ware, showing buff fabric and bright red polished slip. Neck narrows slightly towards the head which is broken off and missing; neck and body flat and with incised lime-filled decoration on both sides. In the front two horizontal lines flanking horizontal double zigzag lines with central punctures around neckline; below short vertical zigzags framed at the bottom by a curved line from shoulders across chest; from shoulders on each side one vertical line flanked on both sides by short diagonal lines pointing downwards to above waist, ending in a depression. In between the depressions a horizontal line, on which from left to right - a short diagonal line running upwards to the right is followed by a short convex arc and another short diagonal line running upwards to the right; this pattern is mirrored below the horizontal line. Below the waist two zones framed by horizontal lines; the upper zone shows chevrons pointing upwards, irregularly interrupted by vertical lines; the lower zone is more regularly, showing upwards pointing chevrons, each of which is divided in the centre by vertical lines. Below a band of chevrons pointing to the right. On the back, a horizontal line can still be seen in the neck exactly at the breaking edge; at the bottom of the neck a horizontal band of chevrons pointing to the left, divided in the centre by a horizontal line. Below a horizontal band of depressions framed on top and bottom by slightly curved horizontal lines. Below this is a horizontal band of short diagonal lines pointing downwards to the right, reaching from shoulder to shoulder. Below the waist three zones framed by horizontal lines; the upper zone shows regularly spaced upwards pointing chevrons, each of which is divided in the centre by vertical lines. The middle zone shows a horizontal double band of zigzags. The lower zone consists of a horizontal band of chevrons pointing to the right.
