Description

Complete Bellarmine jug of stoneware with brown salt-glaze. Upright rim; long, narrow neck; globular body; flat, splayed base. Strap handle runs from below rim to body. Neck ribbed at either end, with stamped foliage design in middle. Body decorated with stamped foliage, possibly oak leaves, and roundels of bearded man in profile. Inscribed band around centre of body reads: 'WAN GOT WIT SO IST MEIN SILT' ('As God wants, such is my goal').

Context (Amendments / updates)
The Accession Register recorded no Place beyond 'No provenance' and the database record listed '?Germany', likely based on the production spot. However, most of the Cole Ambrose collection comes from England (particularly around Ely), so it is just as likely this is a German vessel which was found in England. The Place field has been updated to record both possibilities.
