Context (CMS Context)
Note on card reads: "cf. 1924.879 C Egyptian cemetery Q 2000 - 1700 B.C. Q Kerma, Sudan". It is unclear whether Z 18022-Z 18026 are part of the collection of faience fragments catalogued under 1924.879 C , or if they are also from the cemetery at Kerma, or are just similar. Date: ?20 Century BC; ?19 Century BC; ?18 Century BC. 2000-1700 BC

Context (CMS Context)
The note written on the catalogue cards for Z 18022 - Z 18026, comparing these balls of faience and basketry to 1924.879 C, have caused considerable confusion. On balance, it is likely that this resulted because the 1924.879 C, from Kerma, Sudan, looks very similar to a broken faience ball such as Z 18022 - Z 10825. However, as Reisner's publication makes clear, 1924.879 C is the base of a round bottomed jar, not a ball and there is no evidence that any of these balls (Z 18022 - Z 18026) come from site(s) in Sudan (they are not listed in Reiser's 1923 Kerma publication) or even date to the same period (Middle Kingdom). However, two of the faience balls are marked with a four number sequence not dissimilar to 1924.879 A-C, which was applied at some point after the photographs were taken for Reiser's publication. It is not currently known by whom or to what they refer. Therefore, the Period of Middle Kingdom should bee seen as tentative, as should Sudan in Place.
