Researcher Kate Shepherd noted that Murray's autobiography suggest the origin of the broom. "As the war affected the University and College Libraries they had to curtail drastically their hours of opening and therefore research in Egyptology was out of the question. Instead I made a careful research into the history of Cambridge Town under the Tudors and Stuarts, using the town records preserved in the Guildhall and Downing College, the registers and churchwarden's accounts of the fourteen old parish churches, and the Bishop's Transcripts in the Diocesan Registry at Ely." (Murray, My First Hundred Years, p. 106).
Sheppard notes that 'This is the only mention she makes of Ely, so that is why I think it was this period. Also because the broom shows up in the accessions from 1939-1945. It's still not completely clear why she thought it was a witch's broom.'
