Context (CMS Context)
Two letters from David E. Owen, Director, Leeds City Museum to C.I. Fell found stored with this idno and Z 23772. In them, Dr Owen corresponds with Miss Fell about the 'bone flutes', which she sent, and which will be examined by Mr Todd. He notes that 'I do not think they will any of them be much use musically as none is complete... It seems a very remarkable thing that they were made in these pieces. I suppose they could only be cut from the centre of the shank of the bone' (13 February 1953). He goes on to say (3 March 1953) that 'they throw a certain amount on flight on the Standfordbury Pipe and are well worth studying. Unfortunately, musically they are of little use because the pitch of the note on a single hole varies with each additional section which could be put on, so one can get no idea of the original sounds. There are at least four flutes here.'

Context (CMS Context)
This object was originally described simply as 'bone object'. Given its similarity to 1883.765.II.7, recently identified as being a box hinge, it is likely that this object is also a box hinge. The Description has been updated accordingly and Iron Age added tentatively.
