The gingerbread cakes were gilded with Dutch metal which stuck on very imperfectly and came off easily. Hence the expression - when things (illegible) " That takes the gild off the gingerbread" . These cakes were very popular at fairs 50 years ago. The moulds were made by members of the Nightingale family.
