Description

Pocket magnetic sundial in a round boxwood case. Domed, push-on lid [2]; bottom [1] has a steel needle projecting upwards from the centre of the inside bottom. This needle is used to balance the triangular brass gnomon and surrounding card dial [4], the latter with the hours marked in Roman numerals and 'Stocliert' inscribed at the top. A second, annular card inset [3] surrounds this dial, decorated with floral/foliate motifs and marked at the quarters with 'NORTH', 'EAST', 'SOUTH' and 'WEST'.

Pocket magnetic sundial in a round boxwood case. The domed, push-on lid (2) is bevelled around the edge and has a circular depression at the apex. The bottom half of the case (1) is plain apart from one circumferential incised line on the side, and with a steel needle projecting upwards from the centre of the inside bottom. This needle is used to balance the triangular brass gnomon and surrounding card dial (4), the latter with the hours from 4-12 and 1-8 marked in Roman numerals and 'Stocliert' inscribed at the top. A second, annular card inset (3) surrounds this dial, decorated with floral/foliate motifs and marked at the quarters with 'NORTH', 'EAST', 'SOUTH' and 'WEST'.
