Description

Iron sword with a flat circular pommel, flared tang and downward curving, flared cross-guard. Fuller down the length of the blade, starting approximately halfway down the tang. Blade is inscribed with the makers mark of small letters 'OSO'. Blade tip has broken away and is missing.

In his 1994 edition of 'The Sword in the Age of Chivalry', Oakeshott identifies this sword as Type XIa, and dates it to the second half of the 12th century. As this is the most recent assessment, the Period field has been updated with this date.
