Context (Analysis)
Stratford (1984) notes that 'this moving image of the dead Christ is stylistically related to two of the most beautiful of all Romanesque bronze crucifix figures, now in Angers and the British Museum (Bloch, 1979, ills. 190-1)... they appear to date from the first quarter of the 12th century and still display marked Ottonian influence. The Cambridge figure is probably somewhat later. In the fluid, gently modelled folds and rich decoration of the loincloth, the walrus ivory Christ found in Worship Street in the City of London (200) is a worthy parallel, again of outstanding artistic quality. The Cambridge 'bronze' Christ was acquired in London, though there is no evidence that it was excavated there.' (p. 242)

Description (Physical description)
Neil Stratford (1984): ‘Copper-alloy, hollow-cast, engraved, no traces of gilding; arms and legs lost; Christ, not crowned, with centrally parted hair in long braids falling on to His shoulders; head slightly inclined to His right, eyelids closed in death; features sensitively modelled, with a long aquiline nose, downward-pointing moustache and beard; torso finely rendered, with rib-cage curving outwards and downwards from beneath the breast; loincloth with prominent knot on right hip and a broad belt decorated with stylised foliate motifs, from beneath which hangs an “apron-fold”; further foliate motifs decorate a band on the left thigh and the lower edges of the loincloth, which falls behind the left knee; the legs were originally parallel and set slightly to the figure’s right; the right arm projected at a slightly lower angle from the shoulder than the left.’

Context (Amendments / updates)
Neil Stratford (1984) dates this figure to c. 1130-40, so the Period field has been updated to remove '13th century' and the date range added. An updated description based on Stratford's has also therefore been added.
