Context (Analysis)
Dr Martin Crampin, University of Wales, examined a photograph of this carving and noted that 'the first thing that comes to mind is the carving of the screens and choir stalls at All Saints Gresford, all late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, which have the same kind of colour and character. This is thought to be English manufacture, perhaps Ludlow. It need not be medieval, I’d suggest fifteenth, sixteenth or conceivably seventeenth century, although it would be virtually impossible to say anything more conclusive without finding a match for it. Given that it was in Pennant’s collection, a north Wales or Cheshire provenance would not be unreasonable, either from a church or a house, or a pub, or a town hall…' He notes that further research and examination would need to be done to confirm any of the above.
