This object is part of a larger loan of Palaeolithic material from the French Government to the Museum, arranged in 1919 between Dr Reinach and Miles Burkitt for use as a teaching collection (see Loan File). Most of the objects are marked with the Musée des Antiquités Nationales (MAN)’s distinctive red number. They were accessioned in 1978 with Z numbers, but remain on loan from MAN.

This handaxe was previously given a British provenance. The markings (number in red ink, shapes of labels) clearly indicate that it was part of the loan deposited at MAA by the Musée des Antiquités Nationales in France in 1919. The place, production and source fields have been amended accordingly.
