Slate palette with irregularly rounded body and projecting head with a narrow neck. This may be intended to depict a turtle or perhaps a bird. Reverse of body shows signs of orange staining.

In his MA thesis (see Bib), George Wing suggests that this palette might be in the form of a turtle, rather than a bird. An updated description, including both possibilities, has been added.

This object type is often referred to as a slate palette. The stone that it is made from is often mistakenly identified as slate or schist. However, it is most likely to be a form of greywacke, an umbrella term that encompasses the stones siltstone and mudstone. This material is almost the sole medium for the production of palettes. The Material field has therefore been updated: 'slate' has been removed and 'greywacke' added in its place.
