Context (Amendments / updates)
This object type is often referred to as a slate palette. The stone that it is made from is often mistakenly identified as slate or schist. However, it is most likely to be a form of greywacke, an umbrella term that encompasses the stones siltstone and mudstone. This material is almost the sole medium for the production of palettes. The Material field has therefore been updated: 'slate' has been removed and 'greywacke' added in its place.
