Context (Other)
This vessel is listed under A312 in Doc.46, what appears to be a catalogue of Egyptian predynastic ceramics in the museum's collection assigning numbers from A300-A326. This numbering system has been marked in red paint on some, but not all (as in this case), of the objects themselves, using the form 'A/01 309' or 'A324'. The vessels listed in the catalogue come from excavations or donations dating to 1899, 1900 and 1901 but often whilst the donor or excavator is known, the actual sites are not known or at least not listed. Who compiled the catalogue and for what purpose is not currently known, although previous suggestions have been that it was F.W. Green's attempt at an abortive numbering scheme. The entry for A312 gives the donor as the Egyptian Research Account, the date of excavation or donation as 1901, and the excavator as John Garstang but no site information. This is in conflict with the database record, which gives the donor as the Egypt Excavation Fund and the site as Hu, which was excavated by Petrie. Furthermore, the grave number is given as 'U 180' whereas on the object and on the catalogue card it is clearly marked 'U10'. Other vessels from Hu have been marked with a U number. More work needs to be done to clarify the provenance of this vessel, but in the meantime the Place has been made tentative, the Source field amended to include the Egyptian Excavation Account and 'U10' added to the Other Numbers field.
