The old label for this object reads: 'Mask of a Female Mummy. This Mask is of the 2nd Century A.D., and was found in the Fayoum, Upper Egypt. On the front is represented, twice over, the mummy standing to be judged before Osiris on his throne, the God of the Under-world and Judge of the Dead. Below are some seated figures. When this lady lived, Egypt was under Roman rule, and probably Hadrian was emperor. She was a pagan, but must have heard of that troublesome sect, which the Jew Mark and Apollos had founded at Alexandria. She may have even seen some Christian martyrdoms, but she was dead before Diocletian's persecutions began. (signed) Colin Scott Moncrieff.'
