Large piece of bone, likely a paddle or spade. Roughly triangular, its handle is rectangular, slightly narrowed by diagonal notches cut on both sides with a diagonal butt end; the other end widens and thins into a flat end, slightly bevelled on one side. Two curved notches are missing from one long edge.

Excavated by Graham Rowley in September 1938 on the site of Therkel Mathiassen’s 1922 excavation. According Rowley (see XA/1/35), he ‘dug for a few afternoons in the lower levels of one of the igloos [Mathiassen] had not completed’. See excavation notebook for list and drawings (XA/1/39/3).
