Description

Composite harpoon or knife. It consists of a flat bone shaft with a curved end, two rivets and blade slits around the tip and down both sides, with part of an iron blade remaining in each. It is tied to the wooden handle with plaited leather or baleen and rivets. The butt end has an oval-shaped terminus with a perforation, filled with a knotted loop of leather, for holding or suspension.

This collection was previously entered as from '?Southampton Island' and collected by Graham Rowley in 1936. However, they correspond to those excavated by Rowley in 1937 at the site of Avartoq [Akbahtok], Strathcona Sound, drawings of which are in his excavation notebook (XA/1/39/4).
