Made by French (Napoleonic) prisoners-of-war confined 1796-1814 in a barracks erected for the purpose at Norman Cross, on the London-Peterborough road, one mile from Yaxley. The largest existing collection of this work is at Peterborough Museum

The catalogue card reads: 'The objects were made by the prisoners from the only materials they could obtain, namely, animal bones and straw. The dyes sometimes used for the straw, and the wood for the framework of boxes, etc., may have been obtained by them from outside, probably at the weekly market at which the finished objects were sold to visitors. Some of the more elaborate pieces were made to order, the framework, etc., being provided by the purchaser."
