Description
Two sherds of Grimstone ware. Hard grey sandy fabric, thick green to greenish brown glaze. One sherd is a human face with pointed beard, applied nose, circle and dot eyes; the other is a fragment of another face with remains of a hand on the face.

Excavated in 1971-1972 by Guy Beresford, Deserted Medieval Village Research Group, in association with the Department of the Environment. Rim, arms and face of jug from service room house 4 and on cobbles leading to house 4 (Excavation no. M110). One sherd comprising upper part of arms from service room of house 3 (Excavation no. M116).

Guy Beresford: 'Hard grey sandy fabric, covered on outer side with thick glaze varying in colour from green to greenish brown. Applied decoration in the form of a human face with pointed beard, applied nose, circle and dot eyes and plain arms springing from the sides of the face to the body of the jug. Body of vessel decorated with incised lines and bands of clay in low relief.'

Record for 1977.755[.1-14]: '14 sherds of Grimstone ware, including the rim, two human faces and arms of one jug, the upper arms of a second jug, and various smaller sherds. Hard grey sandy fabric, thick green to greenish brown glaze, and decoration comprising one human face with pointed beard, applied nose, circle and dot eyes, and a fragment of another face with remains of a hand on the face, and plain arms extending from the sides of the face to the body. Body decorated with incised lines. Some sherds reconstructed.'
