Context (CMS Context)
There is a letter attached to the catalogue card which reads: " The details with reference to the Catsholme man are as follows:- A new drainage dyke is in process of being cut between the Wissey River and Methold Common Fen. It passes through Catshlome Hill which appears to be a narrow ridge of chalk capped by gravel running due east and west. The geological sections exposed by the dyke at it' s deepest part appear to be very interesting and I suggest should be seen by Professor Jones. Pockets of running white and yellow sand appear in several places between the chalk and the gravel and when the dyke runs off the ridge they appear between chalk and sandy clay above which is peat. It was in one of the latter (composed of white sand)siturated on the west bank of the dyke about 100 yards north of where it cuts the road to Methwold Hythe that the skeleton was found by the men making the dyke. According to them it was on its back, head to north west, legs and one arm extended in line with the spine, the other arm bent. The only object with it was the cast-off horn of a deer (evidently used as a dagger -Lethbridge has this for the Museum). The jaws and other parts of the skeleton were taken by various local people. I have offered a reward for their return. The pocket of sand had been filled in and its face boarded up but our excavation from the top of the bank down to the roof of the pocket coupled with the evidence of the men provides the following section with approximate measurements" . Then follows a diagram on letter; Found: Found when a new drainage dyke was being made between the River Wissey and Methwold Common Fen, at a place known as Catsholme Hill; Collected by: Fowler.Major.Gordon in 1931
